Gear Testing

As light as a feather. There is a reason that phrase exits. Because no other material, not even space-age technology from NASA, is as warm, light and compressible as down.  Down is backpacking’s miracle insulation.   But down has one major flaw. When it gets wet, it looses all its magical properties. It can’t insulate, it gets really heavy, and can even be deadly.  And that one fatal flaw is the reason why I spend so much time, effort, and worry trying to

Freestanding ultralight tents are my favorite. So when I found out MSR redesigned the Freelite 2 to be eight ounces lighter—coming in closer to two pounds—well, I had to check it out.  And I realized, this tent feels a whole lot like another two-pound tent I’ve used for years: the Nemo Hornet elite. Plus, MSR claims their new Freelite is … “More Spacious Than the Nemo Hornet” Which was just begging for a comparison.  So this is the new MSR Freelite 2 vs. the

What is the Holy Grail of water filters? I can only imagine from the name that Grayl wants to hold that title. But is it really the best? Or is it a huge failure? So you can choose wisely Here are the Grayl Geopress pros and cons.  Oh, be sure to check out this video where I see if Grayl can filter out Coke?  https://youtu.be/tpd0tHdZGCw Okay I’m going to start with the cons and just a short disclaimer. ZOLEO Satellite Communicator Staying connected in the backcountry is a luxury that is becoming more and more accessible. There are currently at least 5 companies offering some sort of Satellite messaging. But which one is the best? Well for the last several months I have been using the ZOLEO Satellite Communicator and have become very impressed. But is it the best? Only you can decide. Here are the ZOLEO Pros and Cons.  https://youtu.be/QukHOYoNc0E Pro Number One.  ZOLEO does one thing better than anything else

If you are looking for an ultralight tent one of the best options on the market is the Nemo Hornet Elite 2p tent. Weighing in at 2 pounds 1 oz it is one of the lightest two person tents available today. But that weight savings can come at a cost, and I’m not just talking about the $500 price tag. Before you buy the Nemo Hornet Elite check out my pros and Cons: https://youtu.be/t_CSxYBsI6o Con Number One  The Hornet Elite is small, which

I’ve never been much interested in a backcountry hammock. For one, I’m a stomach sleeper (actually I like to flop around) and a hammock just doesn't seem like it would be comfortable for extended sleep. I changed my mind when Grand Trunk offered me the Grand Trunk Parachute Nylon Double Hammock. Well, my wife changed my mind for me. She convinced me to give it a try, after all that’s what reviewing is all about. Grand Trunk Double HammockGrand Trunk

This is the one of several posts contributed by my wife. A regular segment on MyLifeOutdoors. A valuable resource to women (and their husbands) who love the outdoors (or who, at least, wish to love the outdoors). This is My Wife Outdoors. When I think of hiking I am transported to a place where life is simpler. Where all I have to worry about is my survival in the backcountry of some remote and beautiful location. I think of quiet time.

What is your favorite part about camping? The scenery? the solitude? Just being outdoors? These are all things I love about camping. But one of my favorite aspects of camping is the food. I love a good camp meal, but lets face it, good food, and solitude are rarely compatible. Freeze dried, and non-perishable foods that make it into the backcountry only taste good because you’re hungry. Car camping allows you to bring a cooler and keep delicious (yet perishable)
